Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters… It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Devotional

A lot of men spend years trying to prove something.

  • Prove you’re successful.
  • Prove you’re strong.
  • Prove you’re respected.
  • Prove you’re a good provider.
  • Prove you’re tougher than the next guy.
  • Prove you belong in the room.
  • Prove the people who doubted you were wrong.

And achievement itself isn’t the problem.

  • Work hard.
  • Build something.
  • Compete.
  • Improve.
  • Become excellent at what God has given you to do.

The problem begins when your identity becomes dependent on other people noticing.

Then success is never enough.

You get the promotion—but immediately start thinking about the next one.

You buy the house—but notice somebody else’s is bigger.

You get stronger—but compare your numbers with another man.

You accomplish something—but feel disappointed because nobody acknowledged it.

You serve—but become frustrated when nobody thanks you.

Without realizing it, you’re no longer simply doing good work.

You’re performing for approval.

Paul gives us a completely different audience.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

That changes things.

  • If God is your audience, you can work hard when nobody notices.
  • You can do the right thing without receiving credit.
  • You can serve your family without keeping score.
  • You can encourage another man’s success without feeling threatened by it.
  • You can admit you don’t know something.
  • You can ask for help.
  • You can choose the lighter workout when your body needs recovery.

That’s important today.

This is an active recovery day.

And sometimes men struggle with recovery because slowing down feels like weakness.

We turn an easy run into a race.

We turn a walk into a weighted march.

We add another workout because mobility doesn’t feel like “enough.”

Why?

Sometimes we’re still trying to prove something.

But mature strength knows when to push and when to recover.

You don’t need to impress anyone today.

Not with your workout.

Not with your title.

Not with your possessions.

Not with how busy you are.

Not with how much you can endure.

Your value was never supposed to come from any of those things.

So work hard when it’s time to work.

Train hard when it’s time to train.

Compete when it’s time to compete.

And recover when it’s time to recover.

Do all of it for an audience of One.

Reflection Questions

  • Who are you still trying to impress?

  • What accomplishment do you secretly hope will finally make you feel like you’re enough?

  • Do you struggle when someone else receives recognition you wanted?

  • How would you live differently if God’s approval mattered more than everyone else’s?
